Advice For Second RNAT Test From CSIRO

Please note there is an AUD $155.00 surcharge for an overseas submission.
Please ensure your sample/s is serum, not whole blood.
Paperwork that is required to accompany your submission must be included in a document envelope inside your transportation box as well as on the outside of the box.
Samples must be collected by a registered Veterinary Surgeon, who must certify that the health status of the animal complies with the requirements of the import permit for the specimens. Include the certificate in the document envelope enclosed in the box and on the outside of the box.
A copy of our laboratory submission form must be completed and enclosed in the box, and a copy must also be included in the document envelope on the outside of the box. All pets belonging to one owner can be included on the one submission form or can be on separate forms. Please note that AAHL is not part of the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service and does not determine the tests required. Therefore the submitter must indicate the tests required on the submission form.
An import permit for the samples is required and this is attached to this email. This should also be document envelope enclosed in the box and on the outside of the box.
We advise where possible you use prepaid courier for delivery of specimens.  An IATA approved Non-infectious biological container (complying with IATA regulation 650) is required to send samples to us for testing. You can either provide your own container or you can purchase one from DGP –Specimen Transport Packaging. The contact for them is Stan Gorr, Phone +61 0419 506 754 or Email Stan_gorr@hotmail.com
We require notice prior to dispatch, and an email or fax copy of the consignment note/speed post docket must be sent to facilitate location of material.
Results are usually available within 10 working days of receipt of the samples.
Our original report will be sent to the Veterinary Practice concerned, and where appropriate a copy will be forwarded to the owner or caretaker of the animal(s).
If you require Rabies Antibody testing, the samples need to be sent to us by Monday. This testing commences on a Tuesday and results are sent out on the following Friday or Monday. Laboratory Testing Fees for the Rabies Antibody Test is AUD $160 with an additional Overseas Surcharge of AUD $155. The total charge is AUD $315.
Other tests for quarantine purposes are also available and are commenced on different days. Please see the AAHL DS Manual that is attached for testing schedules and pricing.
Payment must be made prior to the results being released. A credit card form is attached. This needs to be only enclosed in the box in the document envelope enclosed in the box or can be emailed to us separately.

Advice From APHA/AHVLA About RNAT Test

  • You will need either 1ml serum (preferable) or 2mls whole blood for each test in a plain uncoated tube (no Heparin or EDTA).
  • Attached is the submission form which must be fully completed and signed by the submitting veterinarian.
  • We give a three week turn round time from receipt of samples. The result will be e-mailed to the vet practice unless otherwise requested on the submission form.
  • The price of the FAVN test is £40.20 sterling (plus VAT if applicable) for each animal if you require just a pass or fail result (TC0712). If you require an exact titre level (TC0570) the price is £65.45 (plus VAT if applicable). Please state on the submission form which test you require otherwise TC0712 will be tested. Reports are normally sent by e-mail. If you require a posted original copy there is an additional charge of £10 (plus VAT if applicable).
  • Payment can be sent by cheque with the sample, or card details can be entered on the form. We will need the card holder’s phone number in case there are any problems with taking the payment. Alternatively the vet practice can be invoiced at the end of the month.
  • The sample must be well packaged to prevent leakage with the pet’s name, owner’s name and microchip number on the tube, and sent by the quickest possible route. Do not freeze the sample as this may affect the test but you may include an ice pack in the parcel to ensure the sample stays cool during transit. The address to send the samples to is on the top of the submission form.
  • The best time to take the blood is 30 days after vaccination for the optimum titre level. This is now a legal requirement for animals entering the UK from non-approved countries. The day of vaccination is counted as day zero, not day one.
  • If sending samples from outside the EU you will need an import licence (attached). One copy of this should be attached to the outside of the package in a clear document wallet. Please declare a minimal value on the courier slip, £1 / $1 or less as the serum has no commercial value and this will prevent the parcel attracting a customs charge, and possibly being delayed.

Advice From Australian Government Imports Department About Microchip And RNAT Test

Microchip numbers that are 9, 10 or 15 digits long are generally readable by International Standards Organisation (ISO) compatible scanners.

It is critical that the microchip number that appears when scanned is identical to the number on your animal’s import permit and supporting documentation.

The Department of Agriculture requires that animals to be imported are implanted with an ISO compatible microchip to ensure the microchip can be read by all the relevant authorities and officers. If the microchip differs from the Department of Agriculture Import Permit, cannot be found or read upon the animal’s arrival in Australia, the animal will be exported to the country of origin.

If there is any doubt that the microchip can be read by an ISO scanner you may wish to send a scanner that can read the microchip together with your dog at the time of export to ensure that Australian authorities will be able to scan the microchip.

The Department of Agriculture considers Cambodia as a non-approved country.

Please refer to our website for further details on the specific steps for importing your dog from Cambodia via a Category 3 country –

The Department of Agriculture suggests that 3-4 weeks should elapse between the primovaccination and the blood draw date for a Rabies Neutralising Antibody Titre Test (RNATT). This waiting period is required to enable the animal's system time to produce sufficient antibodies to record an acceptable titre result.

If your dog has been vaccinated against rabies previously, it is likely that an RNATT would produce an acceptable result if performed before, or at the time of the rabies booster vaccination.

If an unsatisfactory result is returned you will have to repeat the RNATT.

A minimum of 180 days must elapse from the date that the blood sample arrives at the lab for this RNAT test (test result must be >0.5 ml/UL) and the date of export to Australia.

The laboratory report for the Rabies Antibody Titre Test (RNATT) must be conducted by an OIE Rabies Reference Laboratory or the Australian Animal Health Laboratory (Step 4). The Department of Agriculture doesn’t accept laboratory reports for the initial RNATT of a cat/dog originating in a non-approved country. For OIE Rabies Reference Laboratory please see the following link: http://www.oie.int/our-scientific-expertise/reference-laboratories/list-of-laboratories/

You may apply for the import permit once the initial RNATT laboratory report is available (Step 5).

The Department recommends you contact the Official Government Veterinary administration in the approved country as they will be able to assist you with locating a “government approved veterinarian” and a “government approved laboratory" for the confirmation RNAT Test (Step 8).
